What the heck is mindfulness?!
When I say the word mindfulness, what images come to mind? A yogi practicing meditation on a bed of lush grass? A Buddhist monk in the stillness of a temple? A wellness class vocalizing their Om? Though those images are a bit cliche, they do provide some insight to mindfulness and some of those that practice.
"A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique."
Thank you, Oxford! Mindfulness is essentially consciousness of your state of being. Experiencing mindfulness is not limited to yoga, religion or wellness classes. One can practice mindfulness anywhere! From your office to your kitchen and all the way to the dance floor (we'll talk about that in time).
Mindfulness is being aware of how you feel, what you see, smell, hear, think, etc. It encourages us to be present in the moment while acting without judgment and criticism. Mindfulness practices also encourage individuals to tap into their creativity and curiosity of themselves and the world around them. Honestly, it is the most beautifully freeing experience that one can have!
